In-service testing

When your fibre network is in-service, UTEL’s easy-to-use smartphone and web access allow Customer Service teams to test the Passive Optical Network (PON) while talking to customers. This helps to resolve issues more quickly and ensures engineers visits are to fix and not to find.

Our network testing system works outside fibre transmission wavelengths, using WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing). This means that we can test the fibre in real time and not interfere with live traffic and data. Therefore, PON networks, point-to-point or backhaul fibres can be tested at any time without disrupting service traffic.

In addition, the centralised OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) fibre test system is extremely accurate, meaning problem locations can be pinpointed down to a couple of metres. This ensures the correct engineer is sent out to fix the problem, not to find it, again saving truck rolls and maintenance costs.

All too often, the network fibres are sadly unlabeled and left loose, which not only look like a huge mess but are also then difficult to identify. UTEL’s Optical Reflectometer tone generator function allows your engineer to identify specific fibres quickly and easily. Using our smartphone screen, they can instruct the OTDR to generate a tone (270Hz, 300Hz, 1KHz or 2Khz) on the fibre they are looking for and then use a handheld fibre identifier to confirm they have the correct one.
